Milepost Map Overlay API

The Milepost Map Overlay API will allow you to add mile markers onto your own application maps utilizing the mapping platform API's for tile overlays. The overlay works with both web maps and mobile applications.  It can be used with Google Maps, Apple Maps, Mapbox, ArcGIS Maps, HERE Maps, or any other mapping platform that supports raster overlays.

Whether you are a roadside service provider, fleet management platform, or develop first responder applications, with a few lines of code, drop-in the fast-serving mile marker layer onto your map and enhance the usefulness for your customers. All Interstate highway, U.S. highway, state highway, parkway, and turnpike mile markers are included.

The markers are continually updated with new highways and monitored for accuracy, ensuring that you always have the latest data.  Our maps are not simply a scrape of publicly available data. Every mile is meticulously evaluated, compared with authoritative data (if it exists), and locations are adjusted to match the real locations of the mile markers. This is the layer you've been looking for.

Choose from two different raster styles or contact us for more customization options. Please contact us for overlay code samples on the various mapping platforms.

Raster Style 1

Raster style 1 is a simple dot with mile marker label in black text. This style is a little more subtle than style 2 where the mile markers can appear, but not be as prominent.  Style 1 appears in zoom levels 6 through 20, with 10 mile intervals in zoom levels 6-10, 5 mile intervals in zoom levels 11-12, and 1 mile intervals for zoom levels 13 and up. All map overlays have the ability to utilize specific zoom levels as desired.

Raster Style 2

Raster style 2 has the appearance closer to an actual mile marker, with white text on a green background. This is similar to how most maps label exit numbers. The top center of the mile marker label is the origin of the marker location.  Style 2 appears in zoom levels 6 through 20, with 10 mile intervals in zoom levels 6-10, 5 mile intervals in zoom levels 11-12, and 1 mile intervals for zoom levels 13 and up.

Google Earth Example

The apps for Google Maps and Apple Maps on both iOS and Android do not support directly overlaying content from a tile server.  The Google Earth app, however, does support tile overlays from an URL. Several other apps and software, such as ArcGIS and QGIS, also have this functionality. These apps offer a "no-code" method of adding mile markers to their maps.

In the Google Earth app on iOS or Android, or using the web version https://earth.google.com, click on Add Tile Overlay. In the Overlay URL pattern box, copy and paste the mile marker end point below into this window. The endpoint URL and API key will be provided to you upon subscribing. Be sure to add your API key to the URL before you copy it. Keep the tile size of 256px. The remaining default settings will work fine, but you can adjust as desired.
